ORDERING THE ROADSTER TONNEAU

One of the original Z3 tonneaus was fabricated by Terry Liggett. The time, expense, and materials of his tonneau cover has cost him over $250. This Roadster Tonneau doesn't use the heavy canvas Terry selected, but it goes the distance in offering the same protection while adding the ultra-convenient features like quick-release straps and compactness.

The Roadster Tonneaus are made of a strong, lightweight, compact, and water-repellant nylon taffeta.

Nov 2005 Update: November marks the sale of the final Roadster Tonneau. In 1998, this project was born out of personal necessity first and foremost to have a quick cover for a modern classic. Short production batches were made over the next eight years to provide fellow roadster fanatics their own Roadster Tonneau.

Although there was pressure from at least one vendor to double its pricetag, I held the Roadster Tonneau to its low $79.95 price over the years. The Roadster Tonneau was sold through banner ads supporting the old bimmer.org message board, a vendor tent at the 1999 Homecoming, ad space in the Z Registry newsletter, classified entries in the Roundel Magazine, and most importantly through word of mouth from the many, many loyal customers.

I'm proud to point out that this Roadster Tonneau project has never resorted to spam through email nor the message boards to promote itself. I'd like to extend my deepest thanks to all the customers who posted unsolicited praises of this product over the years. Yes, I've read most of the threads throughout the years. I apologize if I've never chimed-in on them, but I don't believe in using the praises as an opening to stick an opportunistic foot-in-the-door.

Another proud factoid to mention is that through the lengthy eight-year production run, the number of returns can be counted on one hand. This is attributable to all those customers who were empowered with as many details and usage aspects of this product as I could post on this website. Thank you all you intelligent customers who made this venture hassle-free for me.

The last Z3 roadster rolled off the South Carolina assembly line in June of 2002. Years later, there are still enthusiasts with the same need for a Roadster Tonneau as I had at the beginning. Alas, all good things must come to an end. The last Roadster Tonneau from the final batch was shipped to a Z3 owner in California. The Roadster Tonneau project has taught me much and enabled me to meet some fantastic enthusiasts. I will always be thankful for the experience provided by this chapter. My best wishes go out to all my loyal customers. See you down the road. -- Carter
