Hobbyists both new and experienced can often be overwhelmed when it comes to the myriad of Radio Controlled chassis out there and even moreso when it comes to determining what body shells will fit. This page attempts to bring some order by visually charting things out. Unless otherwise noted, all of the following are/were sold as clear polycarbonate shells.
1:10 scale
Tamiya M-series Chassis (M-02L, M-04L)
wheelbase 239mm • width 174mm
1:10 scale
"Universal" Chassis
wheelbase 255mm • width 190mm
1:10 scale
Wide Touring Chassis
wheelbase 255mm • width 200mm
A niche scale, Tamiya's M-series chassis was intentionally designed with slighly smaller measurements because the real-life counterparts of these models were smaller than most cars. The price of this accuracy-to-scale is that body selection that will fit on these chassis is a bit limited. However, most enthusiasts interested in these cars are typically not those who swap bodystyles often or at least have a separate "universal" 1:10 chassis for that.
The predominant chassis size in 1:10th scale electric on-road. Most of the existing kits offered by various manufacturers have wheelbases & widths that roughly conform to those indicated above. Some examples of these "universal 1:10" chassis are Tamiya's TL01•TA02•TA04TRF414, HPI's Sport2Pro3, TeamAssociated's TC3, and TeamLosi's XXX-S to name just a few.
The chassis used for this category typically belong to nitro engined kits, however hobbyists are often successful in using hub spacers and/or offset wheels to properly fit their electric on-road chassis to these shells.
